Ethernet is a widely used networking protocol that defines the rules for transmitting data over a local area network (LAN). It is the most common standard for wired network connections and is the foundation for many communication technologies in homes, businesses, and data centers.
The Standard Ethernet protocol operates on the data link layer of the OSI model and uses a set of rules to govern how devices on a network communicate. It employs a system of frames to encapsulate data, and each device on the network is identified by a unique hardware address known as a Media Access Control (MAC) address.
Ethernet supports various data transfer speeds, with the most common being 10 Mbps (Ethernet), 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet), 1 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet), 10 Gbps, 40 Gbps, and 100 Gbps. The different speeds allow Ethernet to adapt to the evolving demands of network connectivity.
The communication process in Ethernet involves devices on a network contending for access to the shared communication medium using a protocol called Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). However, due to advancements in technology and the prevalence of full-duplex communication, CSMA/CD is no longer widely used.
Ethernet employs various physical media, including twisted pair cables, fiber optics, and coaxial cables. The most common type of Ethernet today is based on twisted pair cables with the widely used "RJ45" connector.
Standard Ethernet has evolved over the years with enhancements to speed, reliability, and efficiency. It continues to be a fundamental technology in networking, enabling the seamless transfer of data between devices and supporting the connectivity infrastructure that underlies the modern digital world.
Course Faq
- Can we download the notes?
Yes, you can download the notes by going to the Module Topics and clicking on the View/Download Module Notes.
- How often notes are updated on AcquireHowTo?
We try our best to provide update notes to our users, so we keep updating them once a week.
- Do you provide only one specific university note?
No, Our team tries to work hard to provide notes from multiple universities like VTU, IP, DTU, Amity, etc, and from multiple courses like B.E, B.Tech, BBA, MBA, BCA, etc.
- Do the Notes you provide belongs to you?
No, the notes we provide belong to the only creator of that notes. May some note belongs to us but not all. AcquireHowTo is a notes providing platform that provide notes from different sources at one place to help the students.
